Tell us about yourself

My name is Wilfred Garbutt and I grew up less than a mile from one of Belize's most visited Mayan sites, Altun Ha. Altun Ha is located within the Belize District approximately 34 miles north of Belize city in a small village called Rockstone Pond. My great grandfather and his 2 daughters were amongst the very first inhabitants of the village. I freelanced at Altun Ha as a guide for 8 years and that is where I came in contact with Explore.

Which Explore tours do you lead?

I did the Altun Ha tour for Explore for several years before I was recruited to lead the tours. I have been leading both the BL and FBZ tours for Explore since 2015.

How long have you worked for Explore?
Since 2015

What is your favourite local food?
If I am inland, my favourite local food is stew beans and rice with baked chicken and fried plantains. If I am on the coast or island, a seafood stew or chowder is my favourite dish.

What do you most love sharing with Explore groups?

I love sharing everything about Belize but especially enjoy sharing the culture and social aspect of the country.

What are you most proud of in your country?
I am most proud about how much of the natural and untouched world Belize still has. I find that this is what visitors are most surprised to learn.

What do travellers find most surprising when they visit?
The fact that when we visit some of these amazing places, how few people or none, we tend to find there is something that always blows visitors away

Customer reviews

Wilfred was incredibly knowledgeable about his country, Mayan history, the local flora and fauna, and the best places to eat in each location. He was very entertaining and easy to listen to as he explained the history of the sites that we visited - we feel that we took in and retained much more information than we would usually do on site visits like these. His eagle eyes spotted birds and other wildlife that we would have completely missed. He was extremely well-organised. All appeared to go like clockwork and, with his attention to detail, we felt that we could relax completely as Wilfred had everything in hand. His patience in answering questions that he must have had to answer before (and probably multiple times just on our trip!) was outstanding.
